We have (2) two cats a lot of dust and pollen. I did a lot of research because our budget is way tight as most folks today. I couldn't afford to make a mistake and have to buy different equipment. There are many different manufacturers that offer all the bells and whistles. These are expensive air purifier units not only to buy but also the "Ongoing Cost" or cost of ownership for their filters.Here is what I concluded after exhaustive internet research together with talking to an industry *SME (*Subject Matter Expert not 3M) based on the current air cleaner market. For Allergy control you don't want or need the bells and whistles because they don't necessarily help you but can actually hurt you depending on *circumstances. A couple of important points about this filter and about filters in general.The filtrete does not have a HEPA filter. A true HEPA filter will remove 99.9% of the particles that pass through it. The filter here will only remove 96%. That is a significant difference if you are suffering from allergies and really need the air passing through the filter to be thoroughly "scrubbed". Next, this unit has a built in ionizer. You can't turn the ionizer off so it runs any time you have the filter on. The theory behind this is that if you negatively charge the particles in the air then they will stick more easily to the positively charged filter. However, a downside of this is that negative ion generators also produce a small amount of ozone. Ozone is a pollutant and can irritate sensitive persons even in very small quantities. So an air purifier that emits the pollutant and harmful-to-humans-chemical called ozone...is that just a contradiction in the highest sense?When we got the product and read on the box that it emits a small amount of ozone but the wording on the box said that it wasn't enough to be harmful...it was still really hard to get past that it puts ozone into your air. The filter is supposed to clean not pollute! Knowing that it produces ozone is enough to not use it. Interestingly enough right after getting it, we saw an article about the dangers of ozone. We tested the filter, and it runs quiet, but that it emits ozone is a deal breaker. It's still hard to fathom that an air "purifier" would pollute. It would be like a water filter or purifier that cleans the water, but then puts trace amounts of lead into the water, but "not enough to be harmful."
